Can you use retinol in the summer? We explain everything.

For years, retinol was considered a "forbidden ingredient" in the summer. The belief persists: if you are going to be in the sun, it is better to avoid it until autumn. However, the latest scientific evidence and dermatological studies refute this idea.

Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A and one of the most studied active ingredients in dermatology, can be just as beneficial in summer as it is in winter, provided it is used correctly and combined with sun protection.

What do the experts say?

Céline AB, biologist, former medical representative, and cosmetologist, confirms that the benefits of retinol are the same in summer as in winter.

“The important thing is not the season, but how you use it,” she explains. She clarifies:

“You should always start by applying retinol in the evening and gradually increase the intensity, using low concentrations if the skin is not used to it, and protect yourself daily with a high-SPF sunscreen. In summer, if the skin is drier due to the sun, air conditioning, or other external factors, you just need to use it every other day and rinse well in the morning.”

Why continue using it in the summer?

Incorporating retinol into your skincare routine during the summer allows you to continue stimulating cell renewal, smoothing out wrinkles, and improving the texture and tone of your skin.

“It is not advisable to stop using it during the summer if you have been using it for a while; you just need to reduce the frequency of evening application if your skin is more dehydrated,” adds Céline AB.

Thanks to current formulas, many of which are encapsulated or combined with soothing active ingredients, it is possible to enjoy its benefits all year round.
